He honestly hadn't meant to scare the child. But there she went, the little Yellow Gelert running away from him, her shoes splashing in the puddles, probably out to tell her parents about the scary Tonu who tried to kidnap her.
Frank huffed, his scowl growing. He watched the girl for the last time was she ran behind a corner, the end of her dirtied dress blowing in the wind. "You'd think parents these days would raise a child to accept help from people," he muttered as he readjusted his brown cap. It was a windy day after rain, chilly enough for the Tonu wear a brown coat over his normal attire.
He recalled her tear-stained face as a pair of bullies pushed her onto the cobblestone street right in front of his home, just as he closed the door. He recalled all the children's faces as he walked forward with narrowed eyes. The two bullies, a Pteri and a Lutari, ran off before he could even get to them. Good riddance, he had thought. But after he watched the two retreat and turned around to face the girl, instead of the grateful face he expected, she wore a face of fear. He tried to calm her down, he really did. But any word from him made her cry even more. It wasn't long before she got herself up (after rudely denying the hand he offered her), and ran.
Grumbling as he went, Frank walked across the street. Normally, he went to The Refuge to check in with things. But today was a Sunday, a time of rest. And with such a bad start to his morning, Frank didn't want to get disturbed by any more people. Deep inside him, he was actually hurt by the little girl. But of course he would never let anyone know that.
With his hand in his pockets, he went on towards the Crumpetmonger for some food.
